Day 29 "44"

So last year a friend of my wifes asked me to come out and shoot one of her sons JV football games.  It was only the second time I shot a football game, the other being a night game, and I was excited to get out and shoot it.

I had a blast and had pretty much full run of the field.  Got some great stuff I think and tried out some different editing stuff while I was at it.

Here is a more natural style of shot I took:

And here is the same shot with some alternate editing style I was playing with at the time:

The differences are subtle but they are there.  What do you think?

  1. I do see the subtle differences and I like both pictures. One thing I like better about the first pictures is that his face is a bit brighter and I always prefer a brighter face. What I prefer about the second picture is the way his uniform looks silvery and you can see more of the grit & dirt on his uniform, helmet & face. Either way, I really like this shot.

  2. I like this shot a great deal. I personally prefer the second example. I think you have popped the detail out of the shadows, and given them a sharpness and new life. For example the sweaty hair on his neck. I also like that the midtones have been popped while being subtly lightened. The sharpening has given it a crisp look, while not being over done. A very nice edit. If you have a moment I would love to hear your thoughts on the editing style you were shooting for. I think you have a real gift for street and candid photography. A talent which is not all that easy to come by. Well done.

  3. Thanks for the kind words!

I really wish I had some brilliant flashes of insight for you about my editing, but I just go with what I feel looks the best.

Hmmm....maybe I will do another step by step editing in this way....
